ACA Health Insurance Open Enrollment Guide

Key dates, deadlines, and what to do if you miss the window.

When Is Open Enrollment?

Open Enrollment is the annual window when anyone can enroll in an ACA marketplace plan, change plans, or update subsidies. It typically runs from November 1 through January 15. Enroll by December 15 for coverage starting January 1.

What If I Miss Open Enrollment?

You may still qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) if you have a qualifying life event, such as losing job-based coverage, moving to a new area, getting married, having a baby, or a change in household income. SEPs generally give you 60 days from the event to enroll.

Do I Need to Renew?

Coverage does not automatically stay the way you set it up. Each year you should review your plan, confirm your income estimate, and update your household information so your subsidies stay accurate. Plans and prices change annually.

What Should I Compare?

Look beyond the monthly premium. Compare the deductible, out-of-pocket maximum, copays, the provider network, and prescription coverage. A slightly higher premium can cost less overall if you use care regularly.

How to Enroll

Three steps to get covered.

Use the subsidy calculator or a quote to estimate your premium tax credit.

Enrollment Questions

Deadlines, SEPs, and renewals.

What is a Special Enrollment Period?

A window of time outside Open Enrollment when you can enroll because of a qualifying life event, usually 60 days from the event.

Can I change plans after enrolling?

Yes — during Open Enrollment you can switch plans, and a qualifying life event may let you change outside it.

What happens if my income changes?

Update your application so your subsidy matches your expected income. Subsidies are reconciled when you file your taxes.

Is coverage guaranteed?

Yes. ACA plans cannot deny you coverage or charge more because of a pre-existing condition.
